First Saturday of each month Matt Velkey and Susan Johnson host the PicknBow Jam at their home in Durham, NC. For those of you who have never been, this is a remedial slow jam. We play out of notebooks I have here and we chat about who will play a lead before we start a song. The list of songs in there is attached (nearly compete). If you haven't been to many jams, this is an easy one to start with!
We open the doors at ~12:30 and the music goes from ~1-4 (with lots of time for snacks, drinks and chit chat!). Email Susan Johnson at susan.johnson42@gmail.com to get directions and be placed her email list for the jam.
Hope to see you there!!

Jack Herrick has been playing traditional British Isles and American music regionally and nationally for over 35 years. He's a founding member of the Red Clay Ramblers - sometimes called "Americas What's It Band." The Ramblers won a Tony award for the production of Fool Moon, collaborated with Sam Shepard for an Off Broadway play a Lie of the Mind, and made countless recordings and international performances. You probably heard them on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion.
Bob Vasile won the Wayne Henderson flat picking competition in 1996. In 1993, with Freyda Epstein and Ralph Gordon formerly of Trapezoid, he formed the group Acoustic Attitude. Their Red House Records CD Midnight at Cabel Hall won national recognition. Their live performances included two live Mountain Stage radio shows broadcasting on over 120 NPR radio stations; they shared the stage with Mark O'Conner, Tony Rice, Mike Marshal and Darol Anger and toured with Bella Fleck and the Flecktones, John Hartford, and Jay Unger.
Jane Peppler began playing with Bob Vasile in 1982. As the Pratie Heads (Gaelic for "Potato"), they were long time members of the NC Touring Artists program; they gave a St Patrick's concert at the Smithsonian Institution and appeared live on the Diane Rehm radio show in Washington DC. Steve Winick wrote in Dirty Linen magazine: "The Pratie Heads were their state's premiere performers of British Isles traditional music." Since then Jane has performed with the world music band Mappamundi and has lectured and performed rare Yiddish theater music at the Library of Congress, at Yidish Vokh and Trip to Yiddishland, and in Poland.

Great house concert at Jim Robert’s in Chapel Hill, double bill with world music trio Craicdown
Craicdown describes its music as WORLD ACOUSTICANA -- acoustic roots music with a high-energy, rock inspired flair. Drawing from both traditional and contemporary sources as well as penning much of their own material, Craicdown's repertoire includes both songs and instrumental pieces ranging in style from Americana to reggae-sounding vocals, from Celtic influenced jigs and reels to the music of Brazil and Argentina. The ensemble’s instrumentation set it apart from other acoustic acts. The band features Rob Sharer on guitar, flute, fiddle and vocals; David DiGiuseppe on accordion and Irish cittern; and Jim Roberts on drums, cajon, djembe and percussion. With a distinctive and unique sound, this trio brings to the stage musical inspiration, a fire in their fingers, and a true love for their art.
The ArtsCenter’s annual Songs from the Circle shows are a celebration of the best in classic American Folk and Bluegrass.
In spring 2012 local guitarist Danny Gotham organized a memorable benefit concert involving a live presentation of songs from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s iconic album of 40 years prior, Will the Circle Be Unbroken. Danny and his colleagues have made this a tradition at The ArtsCenter, and Songs from the Circle returns for its 11th incarnation this year on June 14th. This event builds on the material of the album, paying homage in a more general sense to the classics, with an occasional original that stays in the spirit of classic country and bluegrass.
The Circle Crew for this event includes Jim Watson, Rebecca Newton, Danny Gotham, Hank and Pattie, Mike Babyak, Jan Johansson, FJ Ventre, Isabel Taylor, Larry Nixon, Stan Lewis, Scott McBride, Tommy Goldsmith, and Barry Gray.
First Saturday of each month, slow jam at Matt and Susan’s, big binders of lyrics and chords provided, great way to work on your playing and singing - all instruments welcome! Doors open at 12:30 PM
